WHOA E11: Private Idaho and Lake House

This week on WHOA: A Most EXCELLENT Keanu Reeves podcast, E[G] Exec Producer Alice is back to chat about “My Own Private Idaho” from 1991. And “The Lake House” from 2006.  There’s Shakespeare, there’s postage related time travel, there’s narcolepsy, architecture, Flea…. this episode has it all!

Spoiler Alert

We are discussing the movies in their entirety. So if you want to know if Mike and Scott find Mike’s Mom or if a time bending mailbox is the best possible way to meet new people, you should probably watch the movies ahead of time before we spoil it for you here.

Episode 11 Features

“My Own Private Idaho” from 1991. Keanu is Scott Favor, a sometimes street hustler who is sometimes Shakespearean and sometimes gay for pay and sometimes friends with River Phoenix’s Mike, a fellow street hustler who is always narcoleptic. This is a really interesting film. I recommend it if you are into indie movies, early 90’s grunge, and/or the films of director Gus Van Sant. Of course, if you are into that stuff you have probably already made your way to My Own Private Idaho. In any case, the movie is available to rent on Amazon HERE. And, if you are a film nerd like Alice, it is available in the Criterion Collection on Amazon HERE.

Oh, and here is the article we discuss breifly from the Guardian.

In Episode 11 we also cover

“The Lake House” from 2006. Keanu is Alex Wyler, a sometimes sorta apathetic architect who is sometimes living at a lake house with a magical mailbox that sometimes sends letters into the future to Sandra Bullock’s Kate who is always sorta grumpy. This movie does not follow any sort of logic and, even for a time travel movie, the holes are significant. Still, it turns out that most people like the romance so much they just don’t care about the science. Find out if that applies to you by buying the movie streaming on Amazon HERE or just go nuts and get the DVD!

Whats Up Next?

Coming up next on WHOA we have Episode 12: Dracula and Scanner comin at ya on October November 2nd! In “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” from 1991, Keanu is Johnathan Harker, a lawyer who gets mixed up in some crazy vampire shenanigans. In “A Scanner Darlky,” from 2006 Keanu is Bob Arctor, an undercover officer who gets mixed up in some crazy rotoscoping drug shenanigans.

Your bonus Keanu for the day! Today I give you the teaser trailer for John Wick 2.

And, just for funsies, a weird Japanese intrview with Keanu doing press for “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” …make sure to stick around for the part where he describes playing “Samurai” (a movement based improv warm up game) with Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman. Make sure to create a mental picture of that.

I’m slowly working my way through all of the podcasts, and watching the movies, as well. My love for Keanu was re-lit with John Wick, so I’m very happy to find someone who loves (most of) his work as much as I do.
